Main Categories of Work Permits

1. Employer-Specific Permit

This permit is tied to one designated employer and outlines the job position, location, and authorized work duration. It is essential to receive an official job offer before applying.

If you're in a harmful work situation, options are available to request a different type of permit allowing a change in employment without jeopardizing your legal status.

2. Open Work Permit

Unlike employer-tied permits, open work permits allow greater flexibility by enabling the holder to work for multiple eligible employers.

This type of permit is often available to:

• Graduates from designated institutions (via Post-Graduation Work Permit)
• Spouses of international students or skilled workers
• Refugees and certain protected persons
• Those facing abuse in a current workplace
• Temporary residents under special circumstances

Note that some open permits still include limitations related to job sectors or geographic areas, depending on your immigration program.

General Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must satisfy a baseline set of requirements, including:

• Clear intention to exit the country when authorized stay ends
• Proof of financial means to cover living costs and return travel
• Clean background check and no criminal history
• Good physical health (some cases may require a medical examination)
• No intent to work for prohibited or non-compliant employers

The time it takes to receive your permit varies based on the type of application and the country from which you're applying.

• Biometrics (if needed): Additional CAD $85
• Employer Documentation: May require LMIA or offer reference number
