Who Can Be Sponsored?

If you're a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible to sponsor the following family members:

• Spouse or common-law/conjugal partner
• Dependent children (biological or adopted)
• Parents and grandparents
• Orphaned siblings, nieces/nephews, or grandchildren (under special circumstances)

The sponsor must meet specific income requirements, especially for parent or grandparent sponsorships.

Key Requirements for Sponsors

As a sponsor, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act
• Reside in Canada (or intend to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a PR)
• Demonstrate the financial ability to support the sponsored family member(s)
• Sign an undertaking agreeing to provide financial support and basic needs for a set period

Processing Times & Fees

Processing times vary depending on the relationship and country of origin. On average:

• Spouse/Partner Sponsorship: Approx. 12 months
• Parent/Grandparent Sponsorship: May take 20–24 months

Government Processing Fees:

• Sponsorship fee: CAD $75
• Principal applicant fee: CAD $490
• Right of permanent residence fee: CAD $515
• Biometrics (if applicable): CAD $85 per person
